RESEARCH
Structure is only
part of the story.
The way a material forms matters. I explore how molecular organization, processing, and transport come together in polymer thin films.
01 / BLOCK COPOLYMERS
Guiding self-assembly
How can we guide nanoscale order through the way a material is processed?
Block copolymers join chemically different polymer segments in a single chain. Those segments can separate into remarkably small, repeating domains. My work examines how solvent vapor and surface chemistry influence the structures that form.
02 / THIN-FILM DYNAMICS
Following molecular transport
What can a film’s response to solvent tell us about its internal state?
Solvent molecules can swell a polymer film and change how freely its chains move. By following uptake and release, we can learn about glass transition, physical aging, and the processing pathways available to a material.
03 / X-RAY SCIENCE
Seeing structure as it evolves
How do structure and transport evolve together in a polymer film?
My current research investigates transport in ionomer thin films using in-situ X-ray scattering. Ionomers are polymers with charged groups; in-situ measurements follow structural changes while an experiment is taking place.
CONNECTING THE SCALES
Process. Observe. Understand.
From preparing a film to watching its structure change, each measurement offers another piece of the picture.
